Logroño celebrates San Mateo and the Fiesta de la Vendimia Riojana (Rioja Harvest Festival)
News Rioja Alta Wine Route

From 20 to 26 September, Logroño celebrates the Festivities of San Mateo and the Riojan Grape Harvest, one of the most eagerly awaited and popular events in this town that forms part of the Rioja Alta Wine Route. The town dresses up to celebrate the grape harvest, a tradition that honours the grape harvest and the importance of wine in Rioja culture. A celebration that is a symbol of our roots, our identity and the welcoming character that defines us.

San Mateo marks the beginning of the grape harvest and, although its origins date back to the 12th century, this celebration has evolved while maintaining its essence: celebrating the grape harvest and giving thanks for the harvest.

The San Mateo fiestas offer a wide variety of activities for all tastes and ages. The programme includes parades, concerts, charangas, peñas, children’s performances, firework displays, pelota tournament, bullfighting events… But one of the most symbolic events is undoubtedly the traditional treading of the grapes, where the first grape juice is obtained and offered to the Virgen de Valvanera, patron saint of La Rioja.

For wine and food lovers, San Mateo is a unique opportunity to enjoy wine tastings and samplings in a festive atmosphere. Enjoying Rioja-style potatoes, vine-sawn cutlets or stuffed peppers, among other delicacies, is an essential part of the San Mateo experience. These activities are set up all over the city, offering the chance to try different products from the region. Bars and restaurants also prepare to offer the best of Riojan gastronomy. From the classic tapas in the famous Calle Laurel to the more elaborate dishes in the restaurants, gastronomy plays a leading role in the celebration.
