Experiences

This Friday, 9 August, San Millán de la Cogolla celebrates the second edition of the festival ‘VINGUA, talking about wine and language’, which was launched last year and is being held in the vicinity of the Monastery of Yuso. The day will begin with a talk on ‘The culture of honey in medieval monasteries’, given by the beekeeper and expert on the subject, Álvaro Garrido, who owns the beekeeping operation, Campomiel. It will end with a tasting of mead made and directed by himself.

Afterwards, there will be a talk on new wine projects that arise from family traditions but are led and ‘rethought’ by the new generations. With a modern and very professional approach, they integrate knowledge and respect for the vineyard and good winemaking practices, as well as market orientation, of which they ‘speak’ the same language. Ricardo Fernández, from Bodegas Abeica and José Gil and Vicky Fernández, from Vignerones de la Sonsierra, from ‘Los Martes of Wine’, will take part in the talk ‘How to sell wines with freshness while respecting their temperature’, alluding to these new generations of winemakers. During the talk, a tasting session will be held with the wines of the participants.

Both activities are free and open access and will be held at the Hostería de San Millán. The hall has a maximum capacity of 50 people, which will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
In the afternoon, the most festive event will once again be held with a tasting of wines from eight wineries and cooperatives in the San Millán de la Cogolla area, which will be paired with pinchos made from local products. The tasting can be accessed by purchasing tickets on the spot and, beforehand, in Logroño, at the Escala bookshop and, in San Millán, at the Reception of the Hostería and, in Berceo, at the Campsite.

The participating wineries are the following: Bodegas David Moreno – Bodegas César del Río – Bodegas Zinio – Bodega Cooperativa La Estrella – Juan Carlos Sancha – Cooperativa El Arca de Noé – Bodega Interlocal del Najerilla – Bodegas Ayagar After the tastings, at 22h. there will be the symbolic switching on of the lights of the Monastery of Yuso.

VINGUA, the festive event that unites language and wine
Wine and language are the two most notorious references of La Rioja and San Millán de Cogolla, the municipality that is home to the monasteries that are the cradle of Castilian, brings them together in the event ‘VINGUA, talking about wine and language’ promoted by the town council. The aim of the event is to promote the town, for tourism purposes, through the culture and gastronomy arising from this link.
VINGUA, which aspires to remain and consolidate over time, is supported by the Rioja Alta Wine Route, with the collaboration of the Emilianense Cultural Association and is the closing event of the Cultural Week activities held in San Millán de la Cogolla throughout the week.
