In Rioja Alta, wine is history, culture, landscape and a way of life that can be breathed in every corner. With the aim of bringing this richness closer to students, professionals and wine tourism lovers in general, the University of La Rioja, in collaboration with the Association for the Development of the Rioja Alta (ADRA), has organised the activity ‘Wine tourism experiences in Rioja: A walk through the Rioja Alta’.

This day, which will take place on Saturday 26 April, is a unique opportunity to discover the heart of the region’s wine-growing region through its heritage, its landscapes and its gastronomy. A route designed to immerse oneself in the authenticity of Rioja Alta, visiting three emblematic towns: Cenicero, Nájera and Navarrete.

The day will begin with a visit to Cenicero to visit Bodegas Riojanas, one of the most emblematic firms in the region, with more than a century of history. During the visit, visitors will learn about the winemaking process, from the vineyard to the glass, and will enjoy a guided tasting, where they will be able to appreciate the identity of the wines of this area.

Afterwards, the journey will continue to Nájera, a city with an impressive historical legacy. Here you will visit the Monastery of Santa María la Real, a fundamental enclave on the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela and a symbol of the medieval splendour of La Rioja. Founded in the 11th century, over the centuries it was an important religious and cultural centre, and a burial place for Navarrese kings. It is also linked to the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela. Its history and architecture make it one of the most significant monuments in the region. Its Romanesque-style church with Gothic influences is particularly noteworthy as an example of great architectural beauty.

The last stop will be in Navarrete to visit Bodegas FYA, a global wine tourism project of the Piérola Group. During the day, there will be a tour of the winery and its commitment to the production of wines in earthenware jars. It will also be possible to visit its Ceramics Museum, where relevant historical pieces that earned it the Best of Wine Award in the category of art and culture will be on display. The proposal is completed with a wine tasting and the tasting of a traditional Rioja menu in the winery’s dining room, with panoramic views of the vineyards.
