Everything you can do in May on the Rioja Alta Wine Route (and you won’t want to miss it)
Experiences News Rioja Alta Wine Route

We can safely say that May is one of the best months to explore the Rioja Alta Wine Route; spring is well and truly here and the landscape is at its most beautiful. The vineyards are beginning to come to life, the days are getting longer, and the longer hours of daylight mean you can make the most of every day.

It is also a particularly pleasant time to travel. Without the crowds of summer and autumn, with mild temperatures and a more leisurely pace. A few days in the Rioja Alta will be enough to reconnect with nature, savour our cuisine and learn about our wine culture.

Imagine taking a stroll through the vineyards, enjoying a wine tasting or having a meal outdoors with friends. These are just a few of the things you can do on the Rioja Alta Wine Route, but there is much more on offer, because this month we have a wealth of activities that will turn any visit into a truly memorable experience.

On the first Sunday of the month, the HAROMAS market returns to Haro’s Plaza de la Paz for its second season. It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in local produce, crafts and food and wine. With live cooking demonstrations, tastings and workshops, it offers a direct way to connect with the region and its producers.

On 23 May, the Sajazarra Fair becomes one of the month’s major events. A day combining tradition, wine, culture and conviviality in one of Spain’s most beautiful villages. Tastings, workshops, music and gastronomy in a welcoming atmosphere that reflects the essence of La Rioja.

As part of the ‘One region, five experiences’ programme, May offers a range of events across different towns. From food and wine experiences accompanied by music at ‘Catalarreina’ in Casalarreina on 16 May, to markets, family activities and cultural experiences in Sajazarra or Ollauri. A dynamic way to discover the diversity of Rioja Alta.

For those looking to delve deeper into the world of wine, Fridays in May at Bodegas Valenciso offer a unique opportunity. Each week features a different experience: tastings in concrete vats, from the barrel, or technical comparisons. A programme designed to help you understand wine from the inside out.

The link between wine and wellbeing comes courtesy of Finca Valpiedra. On 16 May, its Winefulness experience combines mindfulness and wine tasting in a stunning setting beside the River Ebro. A unique, sensory and relaxing experience. A week later, the floral workshop adds creativity and nature to the programme.

On 17 May, Montecillo Market opens the doors to its Wine Garden in Navarrete. A free event that brings together wine, design, gastronomy and live music. Perfect for enjoying a relaxed atmosphere, discovering local talent and letting yourself be carried away by the rhythm of the day.

That same month, on 23 May, Bodegas Beronia is holding its 2nd Charity Walk Through the Vineyards. An active event, accessible to all, combining nature and social commitment. A different way to explore the vineyard and contribute to a good cause.

On 30 May, ‘Catas en el Castillo de San Vicente de la Sonsierra’ offers one of the most unique experiences. Tasting wines in the cellars of the walled complex, surrounded by history and stunning scenery, makes this event an absolute must. It is further enhanced by guided tours, fine dining and live music.

In May, wine tastes different. Perhaps because it is enjoyed al fresco, accompanied by seasonal vegetables, asparagus or artichokes. Or because the setting invites you to savour every moment. Whatever the reason, it is a month that brings together the very best of Rioja Alta.

Nature, authenticity, culture and gastronomy come together at an ideal time to travel. If you’re thinking of a getaway, now is the time.
