Visiting wineries, tasting the local gastronomy, doing a tasting in the vineyard… If you think of wine tourism, scenes like these will surely come to your mind, but… But what if we tell you that on the Rioja Alta Wine Route you can get your heart rate up by practising activities that are out of the ordinary?
In this article, we are going to show you some examples of what you can do. But you will find many more in the ‘Experiences’ section of our website and always close to you.
For the first one we suggest you have to get up early, a real challenge if you’re on holiday, but the result will be worth it. Flying in a hot-air balloon over the Rioja Alta Wine Route is a unique and unforgettable experience that you can enjoy whether you come with your family, friends, alone or as a couple. To do this, we board a majestic hot-air balloon and take to the skies, contemplating the seas of vineyards, the wheat fields, the course of the Ebro River, the Cantabria mountains… Relax and let yourself be cradled by the wind with the spectacular landscapes of La Rioja beneath your feet. And, yes, it is an activity suitable for all ages. More information at Globos Arco Iris.
We come down to earth and change means of transport. We leave the balloon and move on to an off-road 4×4 vehicle with driver and guide with which you will ascend to some of the mountains of La Rioja that offer the most spectacular views. From the Obarenes Mountains to the Sonsierra, a 2-3 hour route, with a stop for lunch, offered by our partner, the active tourism company OjaSport.
Do you prefer to drive your own vehicle? Climb aboard one of their quads, single or double, and let yourself be guided by our guides to discover the landscapes of La Rioja. You choose the duration and characteristics of the route: there are routes that last one hour, others last between three and four hours… some include wine tasting and a visit to a winery, others include fun tests…
And if you are a fan of the aquatic environment, this same company also offers you the option of kayaking routes on the river Ebro which, as well as being refreshing, will allow you to get to know the local flora and fauna from an unknown perspective. An activity that runs through calm waters and for which you can choose different difficulty options (beginner, intermediate, expert…).
We leave the water and return to dry land, this time aboard what, for almost all of us, has been our first means of transport: the bicycle. Whether you are an experienced BTT Bike rider and want to do an enotourist route through the mountains, or if you prefer something more gentle to spend an entertaining family morning, without regretting stiffness the next day, you will find several companies that can provide you with this bike rental service and guidance on more and less demanding routes for all audiences.
We have already used the balloon, the 4×4 off-road vehicle, the kayak and the bicycle… Now it’s time for the oldest and most used means of transport in the world: our legs. These are, for sure, the ones that will take us the furthest. Those who have completed the Camino de Santiago by one of its routes know it well. And you, if you want, you can also feel what it means to be a pilgrim for a few hours. The experience offered by Fabres, wine tourism, will take you to walk part of the stage of the Camino de Santiago as it passes through Logroño.
And since we are in the capital of La Rioja and we are using our legs, there is nothing better than using them to explore Logroño Underground. Because this city holds thousands of secrets on the surface, but also under the ground. Discover the stories, legends, illustrious characters and curiosities that have shaped this city over time. Immerse yourself in two incredible caves drilled into the ground. Taste the wines of this region paired with Riojan products in the underground cellars, one of which is the oldest in the city. Get to know Logroño in a different, entertaining and fun way. With this experience offered by our partner Calado.
These are just a few examples of everything you can do on your visit to the Rioja Alta Wine Route. There are many more that you can find depending on the time of year you come: horse-drawn carriage rides, sunset terraces, grape harvests, exclusive experiences tailored to your needs… Take a look at our agenda and live your greatest adventure on the Rioja Alta Wine Route.
