March brings with it the first signs of spring and, with them, a new opportunity to discover the Rioja Alta Wine Route in all its splendour. The vineyards wake up after winter and the phenomenon known as ‘the cry of the vine’ begins: the sap starts to flow again, a sign that a new vegetative cycle is underway. This natural spectacle, together with the blossoming almond trees and the incipient greenery of the fields, creates a unique landscape that invites you to walk the trails and enjoy wine tourism in spring.
This month is also perfect for delving into the world of wine with unique experiences, such as our new Routes on the Route of the Camino de Santiago (Saturday 15 March), or for preparing your trip to experience the most emblematic traditions of Easter Week in La Rioja, which is just around the corner. The impressive performance of the Disciplinantes de San Vicente de la Sonsierra, known as ‘Los Picaos’, is undoubtedly one of the most moving events of Easter Week in La Rioja. The anonymous penitents, in an act of faith and devotion, perform a ritual of self-discipline that has remained intact for centuries. This impressive tradition, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, is a unique experience that leaves no one indifferent. Also noteworthy are the solemn processions that are spread throughout La Rioja, and especially those of its capital, Logroño, which in 2015 were declared an Asset of National Tourist Interest.
The villages on the Rioja Alta Wine Route are also full of activity in spring, with cultural events that make this time of year a special time to visit. Stroll among the vineyards, taste the best wines of the region and enjoy the local gastronomy with special menus and activities designed by our partners for these dates. You can consult them in the Agenda section of our website.
15 March: The Route of the Camino
If you can not wait for Easter, this month awaits a new appointment of our successful wine tourism proposal ‘Rutas en la Ruta’, which this time will feature the Camino de Santiago. La Rioja is a land of passage and rest for pilgrims who walk the Camino and to discover part of this legacy, the route of March 15 will take us through some of its most interesting enclaves.
The day will begin in La Grajera, a natural area on the outskirts of Logroño, where we will make a simple guided tour of 5 kilometres along a stretch of the Camino de Santiago to the pilgrims’ hospital San Juan de Acre, in Navarrete. A different way of getting closer to the Jacobean spirit while enjoying the scenery.
Our next stop will be Bodegas Corral, in Navarrete, where we will learn about its history and taste some of its most representative wines. To round off the experience, we will travel to San Asensio, the birthplace of claret, where we will visit Bodegas Perica, a family winery with more than four generations of history. After an aperitif in their private wine cellar, we will enjoy a lunch with traditional Riojan flavours:
- Aperitif: Spanish omelette, Iberian sausage, Camerano cheese.
- Main course: Rioja-style potatoes with chilli peppers, cheeks in wine and garden salad.
- Dessert: Ice cream cake, coffee and tea.
- Wines: 6cepas6 in its rosé, white and red versions, together with Perica Viña Olagosa crianza and a final touch with Baron de Bermont cava.
Undoubtedly, a day to immerse yourself in the history, wine tourism and gastronomy of the Rioja Alta Wine Route. Places are limited, so buy your ticket as soon as possible.
Finally, we would like to remind you that, if between 1 and 8 March you visit our social networks Facebook or Instagram, you can participate in a draw to enjoy an experience at the foot of the vineyard at Bodegas López de Haro (San Vicente de la Sonsierra), a magnificent proposal for two people consisting of a lunch at the foot of the vineyard followed by a visit to the winery and a commented tasting.
