La Rioja is promoting its extensive, unique and distinctive wine tourism potential in Istanbul

This week in Istanbul, the Government of La Rioja took part in the latest edition of ‘Wine Tasting & Presentation’, a series of events dedicated to the relationship between architecture and wine. This initiative brought together professionals and members of the general public keen to reflect on the connection between these two fields through talks and presentations of flagship projects, such as those in our region. During this forum for dialogue and reflection, the shared values of architecture and wine were explored – two disciplines that have found new avenues for development by collaborating and enriching one another.

These professional events, organised in collaboration with the Spanish Tourist Office in Istanbul, were attended by travel agents, tour operators, the specialist press, architects and the general public. The initiative has helped to raise awareness of La Rioja’s main tourist, cultural and wine-related attractions.

During the sessions, the role that architecture plays in shaping the image of wineries and in enhancing the landscape and wine-growing heritage was analysed. It also gave the public an insight into the reality of wine-producing regions, highlighting the environment, culture and the technical and aesthetic factors involved in wine production.

It has also been highlighted that, in recent decades, the Rioja wine sector has undergone a profound transformation, incorporating architecture as a strategic tool to reinforce its identity, project a contemporary image and enrich the visitor experience. The opening of wineries to the public and the growing interest in learning about winemaking processes, history and the region’s wine heritage have driven the development of wine tourism as one of the sector’s key trends.

Within this context, La Rioja has brilliantly raised awareness of the destination and the wide range of possibilities the region offers in this field from a tourism perspective. Finally, the experience of the Barrio de la Estación in Haro was presented; this neighbourhood is considered one of the world’s most unique wine tourism destinations and an international benchmark for hosting the highest concentration of century-old wineries on the planet.
