Total solar eclipse in Rioja Alta: a historic event to experience amongst the vineyards
Experiences News Rioja Alta Wine Route

The next 12 August 2026, the Rioja Alta Wine Route will become the setting for one of the most extraordinary astronomical events of recent decades: a total solar eclipse.

For a few moments, the Moon will completely cover the Sun and the day will turn into night. A phenomenon that has not been visible in much of Spain for more than a century and that will make Rioja Alta one of the best places in the country to witness it.

All 174 municipalities in Rioja Alta are located within the path of totality, but few places offer such a special setting to experience it as Rioja Alta: vineyards, historic villages, natural viewpoints, wineries, and a wide range of experiences to enjoy this unique moment.

A phenomenon that happens only once in a lifetime

The eclipse will begin around 7:25 pm and will reach its peak shortly after 8:30 pm.

For just over a minute, the Sun will completely disappear behind the Moon. The temperature will drop, the light will change completely, and the landscape will take on an atmosphere that is difficult to describe.

For many people, this will be their only opportunity to witness a total eclipse without leaving Spain.

And experiencing it among vineyards makes the moment even more special.

Experiencing the eclipse among vineyards

The Rioja Alta Wine Route is preparing to turn the eclipse into an experience that goes far beyond astronomical observation. Several wineries have already designed special proposals combining wine, gastronomy, landscape, and nature.

Bodegas Lecea (San Asensio)

The experience will begin with a guided vineyard tour to discover the work behind the vines and will continue in an elevated area with excellent conditions for observation.

Participants will enjoy an informative explanation about the eclipse, an aperitif, and a selection of wines from the winery while waiting for the moment when the Moon completely covers the Sun.

Bodegas David Moreno (Badarán)

Under the name “Eclipse at La Atalaya“, the winery offers an exclusive experience at one of the most privileged viewpoints in Badarán.

The activity includes a self-guided visit to the winery, transfer to La Atalaya, selected wines, appetizers, live music, and certified glasses to safely observe the eclipse.

An opportunity to toast among vineyards while the sky offers one of the most surprising spectacles of the century.

Valenciso (Ollauri)

Valenciso has prepared a special evening for those who wish to enjoy the eclipse in a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by nature.

The proposal includes three wines from the winery, snacks, live music, and certified glasses for safe observation of the phenomenon. All of this in a privileged setting among vineyards, where the experience will be accompanied by the silence of the countryside and the excitement of watching day turn into night for a few moments.

In addition, the winery will offer an optional bus service from Logroño to make access easier for those who want to enjoy the experience without worries.

Eclipse at the Top (San Vicente de la Sonsierra)

San Vicente de la Sonsierra will host one of the great eclipse experiences in Rioja Alta with “Eclipse at the Top among vineyards“, a proposal designed to enjoy the astronomical phenomenon in a privileged location surrounded by vineyards and with 360-degree panoramic views over the Rioja Alta landscape.

The experience will begin at sunset and will combine eclipse observation with gastronomy, wine, and music in a unique setting. All tickets include a welcome pack and dinner, allowing guests to enjoy the event calmly while the sky transforms over one of the region’s most iconic landscapes.

The organisation has also arranged a bus service from Logroño, Haro, and Santo Domingo de la Calzada to make travel easier.

Other experiences in Rioja Alta

The eclipse in La Rioja has also attracted the interest of town councils, associations, and tourism companies.

Logroño will be one of the key locations to observe the total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026. The city is within the path of totality and is preparing a special programme for all audiences.

The City Council will provide two observation areas with good visibility and safety conditions: Felipe VI Park and the Ferial de Las Norias parking area. In addition, the Casa de las Ciencias will organise educational activities and certified glasses will be distributed to enable safe observation.

Municipalities such as Ábalos and Grañón are already working on special activities for the occasion, while different wine tourism companies are designing experiences combining astronomical observation, wine, gastronomy, and heritage.

Everything points to 12 August becoming one of the most special days Rioja Alta has experienced in recent years.

Tips for enjoying the eclipse safely

Observing a total eclipse is a fascinating experience, but it also requires some precautions.

  • Use only certified eclipse glasses with ISO 12312-2 certification.
  • Do not observe the Sun with sunglasses, smoked glass, or homemade methods.
  • If you use cameras, binoculars, or telescopes, make sure they have specific certified filters.
  • Bring water, sun protection, and plan your journey in advance.
  • Respect the natural environment and avoid accessing unauthorised areas by vehicle.
