What to Do in July on the Rioja Alta Wine Route: Festivals, Wineries and Vineyard Experiences
News Rioja Alta Wine Route

July is the month when the Rioja Alta Wine Route comes alive. Town squares fill with people once again, terraces stay busy late into the night, and villages celebrate their traditional festivals—bringing together those who never stop coming home and those discovering the warm hospitality of La Rioja for the first time.

If you don’t have a hometown to return to this summer, you’ll find more than 70 here. And each one has something unique to offer: traditions, gastronomy, wine, spectacular landscapes, and a calendar full of experiences to enjoy at a leisurely pace.

A Summer of Festivals and Traditions

Summer begins with dozens of traditional celebrations across the towns and villages of the Rioja Alta Wine Route. Street parties, wine tastings, concerts, traditional dances, communal meals, and activities for all ages turn every weekend into the perfect opportunity to discover a different destination.

This Saturday, July 11, the Rioja Alta Wine Route will take center stage during the final stage of the 7th Movimiento Ultreya RVE Fénix Cycling Expedition. After spending a week exploring several of Spain’s Wine Routes, participants will start and finish the day in Haro, completing a 150-kilometre route through Villaseca, Tirgo, Casalarreina, Santo Domingo de la Calzada, San Millán de la Cogolla, Badarán, Cárdenas, Tricio, Navarrete, Fuenmayor, Cenicero, Uruñuela, Hormilla, Briones and Labastida before returning to the capital of Rioja Alta.

Participants are expected to arrive at approximately 8:00 p.m. in Plaza de la Paz, where Haro will bring this year’s edition to a close with a festive celebration open to the public. Movimiento Ultreya is much more than a cycling expedition: it is a project that brings together sport, heritage, sustainable tourism, and solidarity to promote rural communities and wine culture as drivers of the future.

Another of the summer’s must-see events is the Crónicas Najerenses, an open-air theatrical production that transforms the medieval history of Nájera into a unique live performance. From July 21 to 25, music, lighting, and theatre come together to tell some of the most significant episodes of the ancient Kingdom of Nájera in an exceptional setting.

And if there is one celebration that truly represents summer in La Rioja, it is the San Asensio Claret Wine Battle, which in 2026 will once again take place on Sunday, July 26, the Sunday closest to the Feast of Saint James. Recognised as a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest, thousands of people gather each year for one of La Rioja’s most entertaining and distinctive celebrations, where claret wine replaces water and fun is guaranteed.

Sunsets Among the Vineyards

July is also the month of outdoor experiences that invite visitors to enjoy wine in a completely different way, surrounded by vineyards.

On Fridays throughout July and August, Bodegas FyA in Navarrete once again hosts its popular Sunsets in the Vineyard Garden, featuring live music, a chill-out area, picnics, and wine in a truly privileged setting.

Every Saturday, Bodegas Beronia continues its now well-established Terrace Among the Vineyards & Grilled T-Bone Steak, combining outstanding food, wine, and live music. In addition, on July 11, the winery will host a special edition featuring DJs and live saxophone, turning the vineyard into the perfect setting for a summer celebration.

On July 17, Finca Valpiedra offers one of those unforgettable experiences: a sunset on the banks of the River Ebro with live music, a cocktail-style dinner, and spectacular views over one of Rioja Alta’s most distinctive vineyards.

July Is Also the Perfect Time to Explore

Beyond the festivals and events, July is an ideal time to discover the Rioja Alta Wine Route at a slower pace.

The vineyards are at one of their most beautiful stages of the year, the countryside invites visitors to explore on foot or by bicycle, and the wine bars at many wineries become perfect places to enjoy a glass of wine while watching the sun go down.

It is also the perfect season to discover our historic villages, visit centuries-old wineries, kayak along the River Ebro, enjoy a hot-air balloon flight over the region, or simply sit on a terrace and watch summer unfold among the vineyards.

The Eclipse Everyone Is Looking Forward To

Although there is still a month to go, many visitors are already booking one of the most anticipated experiences of 2026: the total solar eclipse on August 12, an extraordinary astronomical event that can be experienced in all its splendour from La Rioja.

The Rioja Alta Wine Route will be one of the best places to witness this remarkable phenomenon, and several of our members have already created experiences that combine astronomy, wine, and gastronomy.

Highlights include the experiences organised by Bodegas Lecea, Bodegas David Moreno, Bodegas Valenciso, Bodegas Ayagar, and the event Eclipse on the Heights: A Pairing of Sun, Moon and Earth in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, where the eclipse will be enjoyed among the vineyards with dinners, live music, and specially designed activities for a night that will not be repeated for more than a century.

If you are planning to experience this historic event, we recommend booking as early as possible, as many of these experiences have limited availability.

A Summer to Remember

July is all about village life, shared glasses of wine, long after-lunch conversations, concerts beneath the stars, and walks through the vineyards.

It is the month when the Rioja Alta Wine Route reveals its most authentic character: a land where every village celebrates its identity, every glass of wine tells a story, and every visitor leaves feeling at home.
