The fortress tower of Baños de Rioja, a 13th century keep, was part of a fortress built by the López de Haro family (founders of Vizcaya) at the end of 1200. It originally had two towers, a moat, a wall and defensive bastions, and was topped with battlements. This Fortress Tower has been declared a Historical Heritage Site under Law 16/1985. Due to its characteristics, it corresponds to the prototype of the Gothic tower in the region, with thick ashlar walls 1.70 m thick, a rectangular floor plan and 19 m high. It conserves all its original arrow slit windows on the ground and second floors, windows with semicircular arches and stone seats on the sides on the first and third floors, and Gothic windows with mullioned windows on the fourth floor. After years of hard restoration work, (as it was in a state of ruin), and always respecting the constructive arts of the time, its current owners have managed to make this beautiful and symbolic building full of historical value, turning it into a unique tourist accommodation. It has four floors, there is a room “junior suite” of 30m2, in each of them, a lift accesses directly. All with […]
