July is a vibrant month on the Rioja Alta Wine Route. While other destinations are overwhelmed by summer crowds flocking to the beach, here a different kind of summer awaits you. A peaceful, authentic summer, full of things to do and the unmistakable flavour of our land. Because if you’ve no village to call your own, on the Rioja Alta Wine Route, we welcome you like one of our own.
The more than 70 villages that make up the Route come alive in summer.
The streets fill with children’s laughter, town squares are decked out in festive colours, and local events take over the calendar. Every corner becomes a stage for traditions passed down through generations: pilgrimages, open-air dances, concerts, food tastings and village festivals where past, present and future come together. That’s what July is like on the Rioja Alta Wine Route.
One of the most eagerly awaited events of the month is la Batalla del Clarete, en San Asensio. A unique, fun-filled, and colourful celebration—officially recognised as a Festival of Tourist Interest—it takes place on the Sunday in July closest to the feast of Saint James the Apostle; in 2025, that’s Sunday 27 July. Thousands of litres of clarete wine are flung through the air from buckets, bottles and hoses, soaking everyone in wine and joy. It’s an experience you have to live at least once in your lifetime.

For over half a century, the town of Nájera in La Rioja has taken to the stage every July to bring its fascinating medieval history to life. Stories, rituals, legends… characters—some real, others mythical—come together with music and light to create a unique atmosphere, where tales unfold blending fantasy and reality. Las Crónicas Najerenses have been declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in La Rioja, recognised for their originality, deep-rooted popular tradition, and their ability to attract visitors from both within and beyond the region.

But the Rioja Alta Wine Route isn’t all about festivals. There’s also room for calm, nature and switching off. Because wine tourism in July also means strolling through vineyards at their greenest, taking in the views from our natural lookouts, enjoying a glass of wine on a shaded wine bar terrace, or spending the night in one of our charming places to stay.
For those seeking a bit more action, July is also the perfect month for outdoor experiences. On the Rioja Alta Wine Route, you can explore vineyard trails on foot or by bike, go kayaking on the River Ebro, take a balloon flight over the region, or enjoy quad routes through dreamlike landscapes. These are experiences that combine nature, excitement and discovery—ideal for those who enjoy a more active and adventurous kind of wine tourism.

Many of our members have organised special events this month:
sunset wine tastings, vineyard concerts, craft fairs, sporting challenges, exhibitions and exclusive visits. We invite you to check them out in the “Agenda” section of our website and pick your perfect summer plan.
And of course, we couldn’t forget the food. July is the month of chuletillas al sarmiento (lamb chops grilled over vine shoots), of roasted peppers at village fêtes, of choricillo in the town square, and of that glass of wine that always tastes better when shared. Our restaurants and bars are ready to welcome you with something for every palate—from traditional Riojan dishes to innovative menus that will surprise and delight.
Those who’ve already visited know that one of the Wine Route’s greatest treasures is its people. Welcoming, warm, and gifted with that rare ability to make you feel instantly at home. Because on the Rioja Alta Wine Route, tourism isn’t mass tourism. It’s gentle, relaxed, respectful. It’s a kind of tourism that listens, that shares, and that leaves a lasting impression.
So this July, if you’re looking for more than just sun and sand, come and discover the Rioja Alta Wine Route.
You’ll find picture-perfect landscapes, unforgettable festivals, and a land that truly embraces you.
We can’t wait to welcome you!
