Cenicero

Start the route in the Plaza de España in Cenicero, next to the church of San Martín, turn left into the first street and cross the bridge. At the Bodegas Riojanas, turn left again and continue along the same street towards the exit of the town, passing by the Cenicero railway station.

Continue along a path parallel to the railway line, avoiding a level crossing without barriers on the left of the road, turning right after the crossing and taking the Agudillo road. At the crossroads, turn right 90º onto a path that climbs upwards, coinciding with the municipal boundary between Cenicero and Fuenmayor. Border a pine forest by the edge of a vineyard.

There is a stretch in which the paths are carved and a little confusing. A long descent begins until you reach a crossroads where you turn left. Continue along the main path until you reach the junction with the Estación road, along which you continue a few metres to the left where you will reach the old N-232 road. Turn left and continue along the edge of the cemetery.

After a few metres along the road, turn right at the entrance to the new Cenicero industrial estate and continue along the central street. At the end turn right to take the Riamonedo road to join the Riva Rey road, where we turn left at the crossroads. After passing the tunnel under the N-232 road, turn left towards the motorway access. Cross a subway and turn right.

Continue straight on and take the Pinilla road on the left, which you then join by turning right onto the Camino del Plano. We continue towards the motorway, which we cross over a flyover. After crossing the motorway, turn left onto the path that runs parallel to the dual carriageway. After the crossing, continue along the path on the right, the Lleca path, separating us from the motorway.

Ascend to the left on the Alto de la Lleca path. Then turn left again and go uphill until you reach the cairn, where you turn right. The path disappears and the route coincides with a cattle track, heading south, between pine trees. We continue straight on in the same direction until the end of the route at the top of the slope. To the right, under the hillside, you can see a large expanse of vineyards. Turn almost 180º downhill, skirting a large expanse of vineyards through a completely ploughed access.

Straight on along the Ladera path until you reach a junction of four paths. Continue to the right along the path of La Ventosa, heading north, which you will follow until you come to another junction of four paths. Continue straight on along the path which, from this point onwards, is known as the Riva-Rey path. New four-way junction. To continue the circular route, turn 90º to the left and take the camino Mayor.

Turn 90º to the left to take the Valleoscuro path, which begins a gentle ascent. The route enters an area of holm oak that will take you to the highest point of the ascent to El Picón hill. The views are stupendous. Start the descent. We continue the descent and after several signposted turns we reach the path known as Pasada del Carril (cattle track).

Arrive at the junction with the LR-321 road, from Huércanos to Cenicero. Pass it and continue straight on along the same path, the Pasada del Carril path. Crossroads of four paths. Continue straight on in the same direction until you reach the C-113 road from Salas de los Infantes to Cenicero via Nájera. Once here, continue, with caution, a few metres along the hard shoulder. Leave the road to take the first path, with continuity, which appears on the right and then on the left to rejoin the route of the Pasada del Carril and continue. Crossroads of four paths. Turn 90º to the right to take the Carrera path. At the next fork, turn left onto the Carrera de Abajo path, next to the irrigation channel.

Cross over to the Vallejondo path. Turn left and continue along it, parallel to the motorway, which we pass on the road from Uruñuela to Torremontalbo. After passing the A-68 motorway, turn left 180º to take a path (Los Barruecos path) that continues parallel to the motorway. The Barruecos path runs partly parallel to the course of the River Najerilla and rises some 20 metres above it, as if it were a viewpoint.

Exit onto the path from Uruñuela to Torremontalbo, along which the route continues until it reaches the N-232 road in the vicinity of the Torremontalbo bridge. Cross the road with caution, through an area with a wide bend that is relatively easy to see. Once you have crossed the N-232 road, continue straight on along the Cava de la Luz path, which passes under the Castejón-Bilbao railway line.

Arrival at the junction with the Ebro Route of the San Asensio, Cenicero and Torremontalbo Trails. From this point the route to the town of Cenicero is common to both walks. We will walk near an irrigation channel that appears on the right and continue in the same direction until we reach a fork where we turn 90º to the left and return to the same direction after the new crossing. The route heads towards the banks of the river Ebro, which appears in front of us.

Turn 90º after reaching the vicinity of the Ebro. Walk straight along the banks of the river until you pass a bridge over a stream and continue along the river bed with good views of the Ebro. Pass under the Castejón-Bilbao railway line through a tunnel and turn almost 180º to the right at the entrance to Cenicero and along Calle de San Roque, arriving at the Plaza de España in Cenicero and the end of the Cenicero Circular Route.

There is the possibility of turning right to shorten the route returning to Cenicero. We call this junction “Empalme” (junction) and it is intended to close a minor circular route within the great route of 39 kilometres. Continue straight on after the junction, reaching the bridge over the A-68 motorway. End of the junction.

To return to Cenicero turn left and cross the bridge, the route is the same as the outward journey.
